Civil Defence, other MOI depts tackle building collapse

MOI:

The General Directorate of Civil Defence on Tuesday dealt with a case in which a two-storey building had collapsed. The operation, carried out in cooperation with some other Interior Ministry directorates, involved 11 vehicles, 15 police patrols, 60 personnel and 19 ambulances.

The Chief of Public Security, the Capital Governors and the Director-General of the Capital Governorate Police were at the site to follow up the search-and-rescue operation and transportation of the injured to hospital. The operation was carried out in coordination with the National Ambulance Centre for fast transfer of victims.

The Director-General of Civil Defence said that the Operations Room was informed about the incident at around 7:20pm and the Civil Defence and ambulance teams reached the spot within minutes to started the rescue operation. He said that the 20 injured people who had sustained medium to serious injuries were taken to hospitals.

The teams continued with the search-and-rescue operation while the nearby buildings were secured and the plan to provide shelter was activated, in which some people were referred to the Dar Al Karama "Homeless and Beggars Shelters”.

He said that initial details showed the incident was the result of a gas cylinder blast in one of the kitchens on the second floor. He urged people to follow the general safety rules about gas connections for everyone’s safety.
