MOI warning on fake websites and impersonations

The Director-General of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science issued a warning on Monday on the risks posed by those exploiting or posting fabricated news or impersonating individuals or organisations online. This includes falsely claiming to speak on someone’s behalf.

In some instances, with the regional situation being what it is, this sort of activities could fall under the definition of terrorism.

The Director-General also said that the misuse of the Internet in so far as it related to regional security might result in the introduction of regulations on the use of social media.

He urged people to be responsible when using the Internet and understand the limits of the freedom of speech. He also encouraged everyone to respect the law as well as the traditions and ethics of the Bahraini society.
