HE Interior Minister chairs National Anti-Drug Committee meeting

His Excellency Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa chaired on Wednesday the meeting of the National Anti-Drug Committee. The meeting was attended by ministers, government representatives and the panel’s members.

In the beginning, HE Interior Minister welcomed the attendees. He valued their roles and efforts in fighting drug-related challenges and the protection of youth. He appreciated cooperation and coordination between all civic organisations and the role of the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science through the Anti-Narcotics Directorate in enforcing the laws and enhancing awareness.

The committee reviewed topics on the agenda, including allocating land to build a drug addiction hospital and a study by the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science on penalising juveniles for volatile substances intake. The panel referred the study to the Legal Committee for revision.

The meeting reviewed the interim objectives of the second edition of the National Anti-Drug Psychotropic Substances Plan. HE Interior Minister asserted the importance to highlight the plan’s initiatives and successes. He directed generalising the outcomes through special programmes and media materials in various media resources.

Capital Governor and Head of Maan (together) programme against drug and addiction committee briefed the meeting about rules for selling e-cigarettes and their products. The Health Minister highlighted coordination with the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism to regulate the import and selling of e-cigarettes.

HE Interior Minister directed to translate the national anti-drug efforts to be showcased by the Ministry of Information, National Communication Centre and Bahrain embassies to the world

Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments said that narcotics were among the top global social and health issues that should be tackled by updating laws and penalties to meet the development in related crimes.

The committee was briefed on a proposal by the Public Prosecution to amend narcotics and psychotropic substances lists. HE Interior Minister expressed thanks and appreciation to the General Attorney for his interest and role in updating systems and laws to fight drug addiction and protect citizens.
