Man arrested for sectarian post on social media

The Director-General of Anti-corruption and Economic and Electronic Security announced on Sunday the arrest of a man suspected of publishing a Tweet carrying defamatory statements against a particular sect in Bahrain. The arrest was part of an effort to reduce sectarian postings on the social media.
The Director-General said Article 309 of the Penal Code specified that one could be jailed for up to one year or fined up to BD100 for offending “by any method of expression one of the recognised religious sects or ridiculing the rituals thereof.”
He said that legal steps were being taken to refer the case to the Public Prosecutor.
