The area of the region is about 80,000 square kilometers, and more than 1,600,000 people live there. It is spread over 78 governorates and centres and receives about 30,000 students daily. King Khalid University is one of the largest universities in Saudi Arabia. It was established by order of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in 1998, when he was crown prince. The order merged the Ibn Saud Islamic University in the Asir region and the King Khalid University to form a university bearing the name of King Khalid in the city of Abha. No fee is charged to the students who study at the university.
