FEBRUARY 2023 46 DOCUMENTARY he National Action Charter Monument is one of the largest cultural edifices in Bahrain. This was built on the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, may God preserve and protect him. It is a gift from His Majesty to the people of Bahrain and is embodied in perpetuating the document of support that recorded the national positions of all citizens, civil, youth, cultural, social, labour and women institutions who pledged to the wise leadership to stand behind it in defence of the right, safeguarding the gains of the homeland and defending its precious soil. It took more than five years to plan, prepare, design, implement, review, follow-up and finalize the educational cultural content of the building since 2006, which shows Bahraini expertise and the latest international technologies. It was officially opened in 2010. The edifice focusses on a set of national goals and authentic Bahraini values based on unity, diversity, respect for others, giving, perseverance, persistence, dedication, cooperation, tolerance and responsibility. It is divided into several sections, including the section of the names carved on the walls of the 220,000 Bahrainis who had the right to vote on the National Action Charter. The design of the project is based on highlighting the names of all citizens who witnessed and participated in an event – one of the greatest democratic events in Bahrain. It is considered globally the largest edifice that immortalizes the names of people. Bahrain is credited with taking precedence in its idea and cultural content, and its idea remains engraved on the walls of the edifice, so that young people come after many years to discuss the names of their fathers and grandfathers who participated in this distinctive democratic stage in Bahrain’s history. It embodies the vision of a king and the story of a people as an architectural masterpiece that reminds us of what unites us.
