MARCH 2023 38 leeve gastrectomy, one of the most popular bariatric surgeries worldwide, is a procedure to lose weight, including improvements in glucose balance before significant weight loss occurs. Sleeve gastrectomy is done to reduce the size of the stomach to about 15 per cent of its original size. This procedure is generally performed laparoscopically. It is a non- reversible (i.e. permanent) procedure as it involves inserting tiny instruments through multiple small incisions in the upper abdomen. Approximately 80 per cent of the stomach is removed, a large part of it along the large curvature. After this procedure, the stomach becomes shaped like a tube or sleeve. In many cases, sleeve gastrectomy may be as effective as gastric bypass surgery. Reducing the size of the stomach limits the amount of food a person can consume. But the stomach may enlarge later in life. In addition, hormonal changes related to satiety hormones occur in the stomach and are associated with the brain, which aid in weight loss. These same hormonal changes also help relieve conditions associated with being overweight, such as high blood pressure or heart disease. Sleeve gastrectomy is often recommended to help lose excess weight and reduce the risk of potential life- threatening weight-related health problems. In general, gastric sleeve surgery may be an option after attempts to lose weight by improving diet and exercise habits if your body mass index is 40 or more (extremely obese). But it is also recommended if your BMI is 35 to 39.9 (obese), and the person also has a weight-related health problems such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, harmful Weight andwatch Procedure tohelp thehighly-obese MEDICAL Dr. Zahra Khalifa Family Medicine Consultant S
