ocieties, like the individual who forms their fundamental building block, can become ill. While modern man has become susceptible to previously unknown diseases, there are even more deadly ailments threatening the very life of societies, requiring urgent and radical treatment. Foremost among these is religious and sectarian extremism. This malignant disease has afflicted our Islamic nation and continues to weigh heavily upon us, despite Islam being a religion of mercy and tolerance, and its people a nation of moderation. This is what our noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, expressed when he said, “God loves gentleness, and He gives for gentleness what He does not give for harshness, nor for anything else.” Numerous studies address the manifestations and causes of extremism and mechanisms for dealing with it. However, reality indicates that we still need more research, investigation, and innovative approaches to address it, because we have not yet fully grasped the seriousness of this social ill, whose manifestations continue to increase through offensive acts that have no connection to religion or morality, despite having no basis in science or historical reality. We can say that extremism is rooted in selfishness and ends in destruction and devastation. History provides ample evidence that civilized nations have transcended extremism and fanaticism because they recognized its destructive impact on lives and property. If we acknowledge this danger, then it is essential to take effective steps toward addressing it. This necessitates returning to the roots and beginning with the stage of education and socialization. It is a well-established fact that families transmit their beliefs, ideas, and culture to their children through upbringing. Therefore, proper education begins within the family, which is the foundation of society - a point on which there is no disagreement. Because humans are inherently social beings, we believe that refined art and sports have a significant positive impact on a child’s psychological development. Refined art, which speaks to the human soul and emotions, cultivates the spirit and elevates morals through its rich aesthetic values and universal language. This is similar to sports. Consequently, it protects children from becoming easy prey for extremism. Therefore, observe the language and practices of those who engage in refined art, whether it be music, painting, poetry, or writing. Even child-rearing has become an art form in itself. As the German philosopher Hegel said, “The arts help humanity realize its humanity.” Sound upbringing and providing the foundations for an individual’s psychological well-being are essential for building a balanced and balanced individual. The question remains: how do we protect children from becoming fertile ground for extremism and fanaticism? This is the best way to build a balanced society, free from such ills. b i n d a i n a@b a t e l c o . c om . b h Maj. Gen.
