Unity in diversity Curious to understand visitors’ experiences, I spoke with those from different different backgrounds. For Abbas, a Bahraini, the event revived his childhood memories. “It takes me back to the old days,” he shared, recounting how he used to walk through these very streets. A highlight for him was showing his family a vintage shop he hadn’t entered in over 30 years, which he described as a deeply nostalgic experience. His wife, Victoria, shared her perspective on the event’s music. “The music felt strange but cool,” she said. Their daughter Alia appreciated the cultural depth of the event. “It’s nice to look at the culture and remind myself of what was here before I was born,” she explained. Mohamed, a visitor from Syria, said the focus on vintage aesthetics was especially intriguing. “I liked seeing the classic cars and the antique shops here,” he said. A Danish tourist, Cecil, said the event’s approach was especially impressive. “You wouldn’t celebrate something like this in Denmark. It was so different to experience something like this,” she observed. Sizzy, from Kyrgyzstan, commented: “The vibe is amazing. Everything is nicely organized - the shops, the cafes, the photo booths. I love it.” Anton, a photographer from the Philippines, was captivated by the retro-style lights. “The lights have always been a favorite, and the aesthetics,” he shared, adding that they were one of his favorite aspects of the event. Dania from Morocco was particularly impressed by the wide array of food. “The food is pretty unique, and I don’t think you’d find it anywhere else,” she remarked as she explored the Barada and sampled some of the restaurants. Manama Retro was more than just an event; it was a heartfelt tribute to Bahrain’s cultural legacy. With meticulous planning, engaging activities, and evocative charm, it became a highlight of the Celebrate Bahrain Season 2024. Cecil Mohamed Sizzy
