AVIATION T his year, the airline industry is set to surpass $1 trillion in revenue for the first time, marking a 4.4 per cent increase from 2024 and highlighting a strong recovery in air travel demand post-pandemic. Despite this financial milestone, however, airlines still face challenges with high costs and slim profit margins, with each passenger contributing just $7 in net profit, according to IATA. As the CEO of a custom aviation software company, I have the unique opportunity to witness firsthand the transformative power of technology in the aviation industry. Here, I delve into the top aviation technology trends helping airlines navigate this complex landscape and find new opportunities through innovation. 1. Transition from legacy systems to modern solutions Many airlines still rely on systems that date back to the 1970s, which, while once foundational, now present challenges such as difficulty in updates, security vulnerabilities and poor integration with modern technologies. This reliance is partly due to the aviation industry’s natural risk aversion and the misconception that these legacy systems offer greater stability. However, IT disruptions highlight that this perceived stability is a misconception. The limitations of legacy systems hinder competitiveness and operational efficiency, particularly as the industry faces rising numbers of air travelers and external shocks like extreme weather and labor strikes. Delta Air Lines is one example of a company embarking on a significant modernization journey by transitioning from its legacy systems to a cloud-based infrastructure. This move has allowed them to enhance their operational resilience and improve customer service. Such transitions are becoming more common as airlines recognize the need to adapt to the ever-changing technological landscape. Modern, cloud-native software solutions offer advantages like enhanced usability, scalability and cost efficiency, with intuitive interfaces and seamless integration with other applications. This shift not only helps airlines stay competitive but also positions them to better meet the evolving expectations of travelers, leading to better-performing operations and happier customers. As airlines continue to embrace these modern solutions, the industry is likely to experience increased innovation, STRONG RECOVERY ON THE CARDS Av i at i on techno l ogy t rends t h i s year
