CULTURE I n the heart of the Middle East, countries like Oman, Jordan, and Bahrain are reviving age-old traditions and reimagining them for the 21st century. These nations, with their rich cultural legacies, are preserving their heritage and creatively integrating it into the fabric of contemporary life, offering visitors an opportunity to explore the past while experiencing the future. From ancient irrigation systems still sustaining modern ecotourism in Oman to digital storytelling at the UNESCO- listed ruins of Petra in Jordan and the revival of Bahrain’s pearling industry through luxury craftsmanship, these destinations show the world that honoring tradition and embracing innovation are not mutually exclusive. Through their tourism initiatives, they also emphasize the significance of cultural heritage. Rich cultural heritage Ross Curran, an assistant professor at the School of Social Sciences at Heriot-Watt University in Dubai, describes cultural heritage tourism as “traveling to experience a destination’s traditions, history, and cultural assets. This includes exploring ancient sites, participating in local traditions, and understanding the cultural significance of art, architecture, and practices unique to the region. It enriches travelers’ knowledge and fosters a deeper appreciation for diverse cultures.” Dr. Curran further states that the Middle East’s rich cultural heritage strengthens its tourism industry, which continues to grow despite external challenges. Bahrain, Jordan, and Oman focus on developing cultural destinations and promoting heritage sites to attract global visitors. Cultural heritage tourism boosts economic growth, preserves historical landmarks, creates jobs, and fosters cultural exchange while challenging stereotypes by showcasing the region’s vibrant legacy and hospitality. Bahrain, for instance, is deeply rooted in its rich culture and heritage, which lie at the core of the island nation. Its history spans over 5,000 years, from the ancient Dilmun civilization through Portuguese and Persian rule to the founding of the Kingdom of Bahrain under the current Al Khalifa royal family, says Deepak Janardanan, a travel management strategist based in Bahrain. Bahrain plays a significant role in the Middle East’s tourism market, particularly with Manama being recognized as the Cu l t ura l touri sm back i n t he game Mi dd l e Eas t nat i ons l everagi ng d i gi t a l techno l ogy
