The Director-General of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing, Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa announced that the alternative sentencing programme had entered its second phase, the open prisons programme, per the directives of His Excellency Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa. He said that the open prisons programme is a milestone in the Alternative Sanctions and Measures Law.
The law is a key development within the reform project of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to promote the criminal justice system and human rights.
The Director-General said there was ongoing coordination with the Public Prosecution, and a list of beneficiaries will be presented to the sentencing enforcement judge. He added that the process aims to integrate convicts into society gradually.
"This phase, which is implemented in the open prisons building, focuses on developing the beneficiaries’ self-reliance, enhancing their confidence, cognitive and professional abilities, and their positive participation in all aspects of life", he said.
The programme aims to help beneficiaries set up projects and integrate them into the labour market, highlighting cooperation between the Interior Ministry, Injaz Bahrain, and Nasser Vocational Training Center.
He asserted that the General Directorate continues to provide programmes to enhance the skills of the law’s beneficiaries.
