The Director-General of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing, Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa, asserted that legal proceedings were taken to cover 210 inmates sentenced in different criminal cases in the rules of the Alternative Sanctions and Measures Law. They were covered after studying their cases' social, economic and security aspects.
He said that the move was part of the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. He also attributed the success of this civilised project to the royal directives and the support of His Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
He said that in coordination with the General Directorate of Reformation and Rehabilitation, a list of candidates who fulfil the criteria was presented to the concerned judge to replace their jail terms with alternative sanctions.
He continued that the increase in the number of beneficiaries reflects the noble goals of the law, including protecting family stability and rehabilitating them to be reintegrated into society.
Alternative penalties include being subjected to electronic monitoring, being banned from going to specific places, attending rehabilitation and training programmes, and working in community service.
