General Directorate of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing attends a lecture

MOI

The General Secretariate of the Shura Council has organised a lecture on alternative sanctions and open prisons in cooperation with the Interior Ministry.

During the lecture, the Director-General of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing, Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa, noted that Bahrain is among the countries with the lowest rates of recommitting crimes of only 2.5% of total beneficiaries of the alternative sanctions and open prisons initiative. He revealed that the programme has so far covered 6370 beneficiaries.

He said that the Alternative Sanctions and Measures Law is part of the noble values of the reform era of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. He said that it reinforced correctional justice in human rights by giving offenders a second chance to be reformed and not commit crimes again by allowing them to go back to their normal lives and keep away from criminal behaviours.

He highlighted the significance of legislation in supporting and expanding alternative sanctions and open prisons.

The lecture highlighted types of alternative sanctions, rules to implement them, and work procedures, along with the open prisons programme that targets those with long jail terms.

The attendees, including Shura Council members, hailed the positive outcomes of the alternative sanctions and open prisons and the major efforts to develop them under the supervision of His Excellency Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa.
