Imprisonment replaced with alternative sanctions for 210 inmates

MOI

Per the royal directives to expand the implementation of the Alternative Sanctions and Measures Law and to consider the social and humanitarian conditions of convicts, the General Directorate of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing has replaced the imprisonment of 210 inmates of the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre after studying the cases and implementing legal conditions. They were selected in coordination with the Public Prosecution and referred the list of the nominated inmates to the judge for approval. Also, 47 inmates joined the open prisons programme, part of the alternative sanction programme. Thus, the number of beneficiaries the law covers since its inception has reached 6,702.

The Director-General of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing, Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa, affirmed the continuation to implement the royal directives of expanding the implementation of the law as a remarkable add value for the human rights journey in Bahrain based on the high principles of the reform era of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. He valued the support of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to reform projects and initiatives and his dedication to providing beneficiaries with services to be reintegrated into society within the criminal justice system.

He highlighted His Excellency the Interior Minister's instructions to follow up on the implementation of the law and provide rehabilitation and training services and programmes for the beneficiaries to promote the law’s success. He noted that the programmes reintegrated the beneficiaries into society. He thanked the supporting authorities and organisations.
