1,189 fire cases in the first half of 2024

MOI

The Director-General of Civil Defence, Brigadier Ali Al Kubaisi, revealed that the General Directorate of Civil Defence dealt with 1,189 fires in houses, establishments, warehouses and vehicles in the first half of 2024. He affirmed the significance of following precautionary safety measures to prevent such mishaps, especially during the summer heat, to protect the safety of citizens and residents.

He said that most fires in houses and residential buildings were caused by negligence and children's mischief after leaving them unattended and playing with flammable materials.

He highlighted the importance of periodic maintenance of electrical appliances and avoiding power overloads. Maintaining gas cylinders and covering them from the sun regularly is highly recommended. It is also essential to have fire distinguishers.

The Director-General said 402 vehicle fires were reported in the same period, urging drivers to maintain their cars regularly and not to keep flammable items, lighters, gaseous substances and batteries in vehicles. The car windows should be kept slightly open to reduce fire risks.

Meanwhile, he urged travellers to secure their homes and belongings, including disconnecting the electricity and gas cylinders. CCTVs and alarm systems should also be kept to deal swiftly with accidents.

He noted that the Public Relations and Awareness Office runs a summer awareness programme that includes training courses, workshops, and campaigns.
