The Director-General of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa chaired the Interior Ministry Delegation in the 8th Meeting of Police Chiefs from the Middle East and North Africa MENA, convened at the headquarters of the International Criminal Police Organization INTERPOL in Lyon.
During the meeting, Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa emphasised the importance of cooperation and coordination between countries in various security fields, particularly in the development of correctional and rehabilitation institutions. He pointed out that the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society is part of the alternative sentencing programme, especially through the "Open Prisons Programme," which aims to achieve criminal justice and protect human rights, as well as maintain the security of the community.
He lauded the significant advancements made by the Kingdom of Bahrain in the criminal justice system, which has made it a leading model in the field of human rights. He highlighted Bahrain’s pioneering initiatives, especially the alternative sentencing project, which aligns with the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. He emphasised that these initiatives, including the Open Prisons Programme, receive substantial support from His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and are followed- up by His Excellency Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa.
Moreover, he explained that the Alternative Penalties Law, issued in 2017, is the first of its kind in the Middle East. He highlighted the Open Prisons Programme, which includes advanced training and rehabilitation programmes aimed at providing employment opportunities for beneficiaries after their rehabilitation, in collaboration with various state sectors.
In conclusion, Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa wished the meeting results would be beneficial to the security and stability of communities.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa met with Mr Jürgen Stock, Secretary-General of Interpol, where Shaikh Khalid referred to the outstanding steps taken by the Kingdom of Bahrain in developing and enhancing the system of correctional and rehabilitation institutions, thereby strengthening human rights principles.
