Deputy Chief of Public Security Major General Dr Shaikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, opened the workshop on collecting information and statistics that determine crime indicators, organised by the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
On this occasion, the Deputy Chief of Public Security emphasised that organising the workshop came as part of the implementation of the directives of His Excellency Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, to actively contribute to enhancing police cooperation within the framework of the United Nations and its specialised offices dedicated to combating crime, with the ongoing follow-up from Chief of Public Security Lt. General Tariq bin Hasan Al Hasan.
The Deputy Chief of Public Security pointed out that Bahrain is keen to strengthen cooperation with partners at the national and regional levels, engage in collaboration with relevant international organizations, and stay informed about the latest practices and experiences in crime prevention and the accompanying awareness efforts to reduce crime rates and focusing on setting and monitoring statistics to identify crime indicators, ultimately improving Bahrain’s ranking in the United Nations crime monitoring indices.
The Deputy Chief of Public Security praised the efforts of the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science, along with the Ministry of Interior directorates, for their national efforts and for implementing measures based on community partnership. These include launching effective programmes and initiatives aimed at enhancing societal security. He thanked all those involved in the workshop and the participants, wishing them success.
The Director-General of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science emphasised that holding this workshop reflected the Directorate's commitment to continuing to reduce crime rates and to setting and monitoring the statistics that define these indicators. He noted that a team was formed to oversee this process with the appropriate training provided by international UN experts.
In the same context, Dr. Hatem Ali, Regional Director of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GGC) Office of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), thanked the Deputy Chief of Public Security and the Director-General of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science for their fruitful cooperation with the UN office. He highlighted their prominent role in crime prevention, which contributes to enhancing Bahrain’s international and regional status.
During the workshop, participants were introduced to its objectives, and the mechanisms for collecting information and statistics, identifying data sources and addressing challenges. Suitable solutions for these challenges were also discussed.
