Muharraq Governor Salman Bin Hindi Al Mannai, in the presence of Deputy Muharraq Governor Brigadier General Jassim Mohammed Al Ghattam, received Regional Adviser for Health Promotion and Social Determinants of Health Dr Samar Elfeky, Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health Dr. Samia Ali Bahram, the WHO Bahrain team, and Ministry of Health representatives. The delegation assessed Muharraq’s progress towards accreditation as a Healthy City, underscoring the governorate’s commitment to advancing public health and sustainable development in alignment with WHO’s global objectives.

During the meeting, the Muharraq Governor highlighted the governorate’s strides since joining the Healthy Cities Programme, detailing strategic plans, training workshops, and community initiatives to bolster public awareness. He emphasised the governorate’s ambition to secure accreditation as a premier health governorate by focusing on enhancing the health environment and elevating the quality of life for all residents.

He noted that the Muharraq Governorate, with its rich heritage, strategic location, and advanced infrastructure, was among the first to embrace the Healthy Cities Programme, following directives from His Excellency Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa. This initiative coordinated with the Ministry of Health and the relevant authorities to serve the residents. He commended the collaborative efforts of government, private, and civil society entities in advancing the programme’s goals, emphasising the governorate’s ongoing pursuit of full accreditation as a healthy governorate.

The WHO representative undertook a field tour of key facilities in the governorate, including green spaces, health and social centres, and civil society institutions. This visit aimed to assess compliance with the Healthy Cities Programme’s standards, paving the way for Muharraq’s official accreditation as a fully healthy governorate.

The Regional Adviser for Health Promotion and Social Determinants of Health commended the Muharraq Governorate’s dedication to meeting the Healthy Cities Programme’s standards, highlighting Bahrain’s commitment to advancing public health and sustainable development and lauded the robust community partnerships.
