The Interior Ministry Undersecretary for Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA), Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa, visited Helsinki International Airport to explore Finland’s experience in implementing smart border control systems.
The visit included a series of meetings with the Finnish Border Control Administration and Helsinki Airport Company (Finavia), during which the delegation was briefed on the integrated digital system used at the airport, allowing travellers to cross borders securely and seamlessly using advanced technologies.
The delegation also toured the Document Fraud Detection Centre at Helsinki Airport, where they reviewed the latest technologies used for verifying passports and identity cards, including automated verification systems and forgery detection tools, as well as the training mechanisms adopted to enhance personnel's capabilities in assessing document authenticity.
The visit featured technical presentations on the airport’s digital infrastructure, identity verification systems, and electronic interconnectivity mechanisms between relevant authorities, all of which contribute to expediting procedures and improving border security efficiency.
The NPRA Undersecretary expressed his appreciation for the advanced implementation of these systems, affirming that the Kingdom of Bahrain is steadily progressing in the development of its passport and border control systems, aligning with global best practices that enhance the ease of travel for citizens, residents, and international visitors.
This visit forms part of Bahrain’s ongoing efforts to align with the Digital Travel Credential (DTC) initiative, as required by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). It supports the broader national digital transformation agenda by introducing interconnected, innovative government services.
