MOI

Coinciding with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the General Directorate of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing held a celebration for the beneficiaries of the “Weyak” programme, a pioneering initiative under the alternative sentencing framework.

The event was attended by the Director-General of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing, Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa, alongside representatives from supporting and partner entities involved in implementing the programme.

On this occasion, the Director-General affirmed that the “Weyak” programme, from which two batches have graduated with a success rate of 87%, is a practical embodiment of the instructions of His Excellency Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa to enhance recovery opportunities and ensure the safe reintegration of individuals into society.

He noted that the programme has proven the effectiveness of psychological and social support as a key method to prevent relapse into addiction, expressing pride in the positive results achieved through genuine partnership with relevant stakeholders.

He also extended his appreciation to the entities cooperating in the implementation of the programme, stressing the importance of continuing such national initiatives rooted in human values and aimed at building a safer and more stable society.

Launched in 2024, the “Weyak” programme is one of the pioneering initiatives reflecting the Interior Ministry’s commitment to promoting restorative justice and adopting a humanitarian approach in addressing addiction-related issues. It contributes to fostering a more aware and cohesive society.

The programme is designed to rehabilitate beneficiaries psychologically, physically, and socially, enabling them to reintegrate positively into society, reclaim their lives, and continue their journey free from addiction and deviant behaviour.
