The CE of the Financial Intelligence National Centre, Shaikha May bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, headed Bahrain’s delegation to the 31st Egmont Group Plenary Meeting, held in Luxembourg from 6 to 11 July, with the participation of representatives from 181 Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) worldwide.
The meeting coincided with the 30th anniversary of the Egmont Group’s establishment. It focused on key strategic issues, including strengthening the independence and operational autonomy of FIUs to ensure their effectiveness, allocating sufficient resources to counter illicit financing, and exploring future developments in the Egmont Secure Web to ensure the safe exchange of sensitive information.
During the meeting, the Egmont Group declared June 9 of each year as the International Day for Financial Intelligence Units, in recognition of their vital role in combating financial crimes and promoting global transparency.
After the plenary, the Egmont Group expressed its appreciation to Shaikha May for her valuable contributions and dedicated efforts during her tenure as Vice-Chair of the Group and Regional Representative for the Middle East and North Africa. Her leadership significantly enhanced regional and international cooperation frameworks in combating financial crimes and advancing the Group’s mission to strengthen the global FIU network.
