Reformation and Rehabilitation: all inmates with active COVID-19 are stable

MOI:

The General Directorate of Reformation and Rehabilitation emphasised that the health and safety of all inmates remains a top priority as per the reformation and rehabilitation organisation law. The Directorate highlighted its commitment to continue following all health and precautionary measures aimed at mitigating the spread of COVID-19, in coordination with the Ministry of Health and the National Medical Taskforce for Combating the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The department is further committed to implementing all medical measures required including following up on active COVID-19 cases amongst inmates and referring them to the isolation and treatment centres if required.

In line with the expansion of the pardon and alternative penalties, the General Directorate of Reformation and Rehabilitation has, for more than a year, taking precautionary measures to protect the inmates' health and safety, including establishing a centre for quarantine and treatment that accommodates active COVID-19 cases, with the ability to increase its capacity if needed. In addition, there has been segregation of certain buildings and work teams, a redistribution of inmates, the opening of new buildings, and the introduction of e-services, as well as a mandatory COVID-19 test to be conducted on all employees and visitors before entering the facility.

As part of our policy of transparency and in an effort to reinforce precautionary measures, on  21 February, the General Directorate of Reformation and Rehabilitation announced the first active COVID-19 case and the required steps and protocols were taken to ensure the health and safety of all.

The health condition of all inmates with active COVID-19 are stable. Inmates are being treated and monitored at a field hospital and are provided with round the clock comprehensive medical care under the supervision of specialised medical teams. Treatment is provided for cases that require medical attention. Meanwhile, precautionary measures are being developed to enable inmates with active COVID-19 to contact their families at the earliest possible opportunity.

Moreover, a full disinfection program has been initiated across the facility, and the contacts of the active cases were identified and are under medical isolation for 14 days, in line with international best practices.

The General Directorate highlighted that the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centres are similar to facilities in other parts of the world all of which are at risk of COVID-19  infection during this time of a global pandemic.

The Directorate expressed its appreciation to Team Bahrain’s medical staff Who continue to treat the inmates who are in need of COVID-19 medical care.

In line with efforts to safeguard the health of all, the General Directorate noted that the Kingdom has succeeded in in providing all types of COVID-19 vaccines for free to inmates, with the right for inmates to choose the type of vaccine they want. 100% of the  inmates who registered for the vaccine, have now been vaccinated.
